How many times a week do you do laundry? I do it once a week. Two loads. I wouldn’t even have that much if I didn’t have gym clothes.
SH’s upstairs neighbors started laundry today at 8:00 a.m. They’ve done laundry every day this past week except Tuesday at 8:00. When they first moved in last month, they did laundry at 6:00, but SH asked them very nicely to wait until he got out of bed before running the machine. They were quite apologetic – the building manager (who also lives on the second floor) had told them the machine could not be heard by anyone else.
So they start their laundry at 8:00. Almost every day. This is a retired couple. If the machine is like SH’s, which it must be, they have an almost-full-sized machine – one of those stacking kind. I’d post a photo but 1) you know what a washing machine looks like and 2) the batteries on my camera are dead. If I, one person who is active, do only two loads of wash a week, why do two persons without a yard need to do six loads of clothes a week? Remember, it’s not as simple as two persons times two loads – there are some economies of scale here – only one set of sheets (which takes up almost one load) and only one set of kitchen things.
What are they doing up there? Taking in laundry from the rest of the building? Do they have only one outfit apiece that they wear every day then wash the next morning? If so, wouldn’t the better strategy be to wash it in the evening before they go to bed? Or maybe they lounge around in their PJs in the morning while they wash the clothes. Maybe they wash the sheets and towels every day.
We haven’t figured it out. I want to know just because I am curious. SH is annoyed because it is noisy. And now they have started to use a treadmill at 6:00 a.m. We heard it this morning.
The end of the line
